Bathroom & hands

Your bathroom is clean but doesn't smell fresh? Look for this cause

حمام منور وفوطة خضرا

If the bathroom looks clean and the smell is still there, it's coming from somewhere you can't see. Spraying air freshener over a smell that has a cause hides it for an hour, and then it's back. Find the cause first.

1. A dry drain

This is the most common cause, and the one nobody thinks of. Under every drain there's a U-bend that holds a little water, and that water is what blocks sewer smells. If a drain isn't used for a while, the water dries out and the smell comes up.

The fix: pour a glass or two of water into any drain that isn't used often, once a week.

2. Ventilation

A bathroom without a window or extractor fan traps humidity, and humidity causes smells.

The fix: run the fan or open the window during your shower and for fifteen minutes after, and leave the door open when nobody's inside.

3. Towels and the bath mat

A damp towel hung up folded, and a bath mat that never dries, are among the biggest sources of smell.

The fix: spread towels out to dry, wash the bath mat regularly, and don't leave it wet on the floor.

4. Sink and bath strainers

Hair and soap residue collect in the strainer and cause smells.

The fix: clean the strainers once a week. If the smell persists, the pipes need a plumber.

5. The bin

The fix: a bin with a lid, emptied every day or two, and washed itself from time to time.

Once the cause is solved: the finishing touch

When the source is gone, that's when a lovely scent really makes a difference.

  • RAWAQ “Clean Breeze” air freshener: an airy, fresh scent that suits the bathroom. A spray after ventilating, not instead of it.
  • RAWAQ hand wash by the basin: Morning Breeze if you like a calm scent, or Fresh Berries if you want something fruity. A nicely scented hand wash keeps the basin corner smelling lovely every time someone washes their hands.
