Every home has a shelf or cupboard for cleaning products, usually under the kitchen sink because it's convenient. But the most convenient spot isn't always the safest, especially with young children at home. These rules are simple, and they make a real difference.
1. Out of children's reach
A high shelf, or a cupboard that locks. If products have to stay under the sink, fit a child-safety latch on the cupboard door; you'll find them in household stores. This rule is printed on cleaning product labels for a reason.
2. Always in the original bottle
Never transfer a cleaning product into a water or juice bottle. A child, or even an adult in a hurry, could mistake it for a drink. The original bottle carries the name, the warnings and the directions for use.
3. Never mix cleaning products
Mixing bleach with products that contain ammonia, or with acidic cleaners such as vinegar, releases dangerous gases. Use one product at a time, and rinse with water in between.
4. Away from food
Cleaning products belong on their own shelf, not next to the rice and sugar, and never in the food cupboard.
5. Away from heat and sun
Don't leave them next to the cooker or water heater, or in direct sun on the balcony. Heat affects both the bottle and the product inside.
6. Caps firmly closed
After every use, close the cap until you hear it click. An open cap causes leaks and makes the contents easier to reach.
7. Air while you clean
Open the window or run the extractor fan whenever you use a cleaning product, especially in a small bathroom.
If an accident happens
- If someone swallows a cleaning product: call an ambulance on 123 (Egypt) or go to the nearest hospital immediately, and take the bottle with you. Don't try to make them vomit unless a doctor tells you to.
- If a product gets into the eyes: rinse with plenty of clean water, and get medical help.
