The short answer: there is no single "best" air freshener for every home. Scents from the warm family, such as amber, wood and musk, usually last longest. Citrus and light, fresh scents appear quickly and fade quickly. Airflow, heat and how you spray matter just as much as the scent itself.
5 things that decide how long a scent lasts
- The scent family. Every scent has layers: the first layer shows in the first few minutes and evaporates fast, like lemon and fresh notes. The last layer is what stays, like amber and wood. The richer the warm base, the longer the scent lingers.
- Airflow. An open window or a fan spreads the scent quickly, but also carries it out quickly.
- Heat. In heat and sunlight a scent is stronger at first, then fades faster.
- Where you spray. Spray upwards into the air and let the mist settle. If you'd like to spray curtains or the sofa, check the bottle allows it and test on a hidden spot first.
- How much. Two or three sprays are enough for an average room. More makes the scent heavy; it doesn't make it last longer.
Why does the scent seem gone when it's still there?
Your nose gets used to any smell it's around for a while, and stops noticing it. That's why someone walking in from outside smells it more clearly than you do. Don't spray more because of this. Step out of the room for a bit, come back, and you'll find it's still there.

What should I be careful about?
