Fabric softener in an automatic washing machine: where and when to add it

· 4 min read

غسالة أتوماتيك ودرجها مفتوح وفوط متطبقة

The short answer: in an automatic washing machine, fabric softener goes in the small compartment marked with a flower in the detergent drawer, before you start the programme. The machine holds it until the final rinse and adds it automatically. Don't put it in with the detergent, and don't pour it directly onto clothes.

The detergent drawer: which compartment is for what?

Most front-loading automatic machines have a drawer with three compartments:

  • Compartment (I) or (1): pre-wash, if your programme includes one.
  • Compartment (II) or (2): powder or liquid detergent for the main wash. Usually the largest one.
  • The flower compartment (✿): fabric softener. Usually the smallest, with a line marked MAX inside.

Symbols and layouts vary between models. On top-loading automatic machines, the softener dispenser may be inside the drum itself. Your machine's manual is the reference.

When does the machine add the softener?

During the final rinse, after the detergent has been rinsed out. That's why you add it at the start: the machine waits for the right moment. If it goes in with the detergent, the wash and rinse water will carry it away before it reaches your clothes.

How to use it properly

  1. Use the dose printed on the bottle, adjusted to the size of the load.
  2. Don't go above the MAX line. Overfilling can make it drain early, into the main wash, where it's wasted.
  3. Don't overload the machine, so the final rinse reaches every item.
  4. Close the drawer properly before starting.

Why doesn't the softener scent last?

  • Wet laundry sits in the machine after the cycle. Take it out and hang it straight away; sitting wet creates a damp smell that covers any pleasant scent. Why does laundry smell damp?
  • A dirty or blocked softener compartment. Remove the drawer now and then and wash it in warm water.
  • An overloaded machine, so the softener doesn't reach every item.
  • Drying in a closed space with no airflow, so clothes dry slowly.
  • The scent itself is light. Some scents are made to be subtle; that's a choice, not a flaw.

Where does laundry perfume go?

It depends on the type. Some laundry perfumes go in the softener compartment, others go straight into the drum. Read the directions on the bottle before your first wash.

Which scent should you choose?

RAWAQ fabric softener comes in two scents:

  • Cotton Fresh: the light smell of clean laundry. Great for everyday clothes and bed sheets.
  • Soft Florals: a balanced floral bouquet, if you like your clothes to have a noticeable scent as you fold them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put softener in the same compartment as detergent?

No. Detergent works in the main wash; softener belongs in the final rinse. Put them together and the softener is rinsed away before it reaches your clothes.

Why is there softener left in the compartment after washing?

Usually the compartment is clogged with old residue, or it was filled above the MAX line. Clean the drawer and its channel with warm water, and stick to the line.

How much softener should I use?

Follow the bottle and the size of your load. More won't make the scent noticeably stronger, and it can leave residue on clothes.

Is softener right for every fabric?

Not always. Towels, sportswear and microfibre cloths are usually better without it, and the care label has the final say. Is fabric softener right for every fabric?

In short

Softener goes in the flower compartment, before you start, at the printed dose and never above the MAX line. And take laundry out as soon as the cycle ends.
