Laundry

The home laundry guide: clean clothes that smell lovely, step by step

The short answer: clothes come out clean and smelling lovely when five steps go right: sorting before you wash, reading the care label, the right programme and temperature, detergent and softener in the right place at the printed dose, and drying where air can move. Most laundry problems, like a damp smell or faded colours, come down to one of these.

1. Sort before you wash

  • Whites, lights and darks separately, so colours don't transfer.
  • Towels and sheets on their own. They're heavy and leave lint on everything else.
  • Delicates on their own, or in a mesh laundry bag.
  • Very dirty items separately, like workwear or sportswear, so they don't dirty the whole load.

And before you close the door: empty the pockets, close the zips, and turn jeans and dark clothes inside out.

2. Read the care label

The label uses a few simple symbols:

  • A tub with a number: the maximum water temperature. 30 means lukewarm.
  • A tub with a hand: hand wash only.
  • A triangle: bleach. Crossed out means no bleach.
  • A square with a circle: tumble dryer. Crossed out means line-dry it.
  • An iron with dots: more dots, more heat allowed.

Any symbol with an X through it means don't.

3. Programme and temperature

  • Cotton: towels, sheets and everyday clothes.
  • Synthetics or colours: mixed fabrics, at a lower temperature.
  • Delicates or hand wash: silk, wool and lace.

Hotter water isn't always cleaner. Darks and colours keep their colour better in lukewarm or cold water, and the label has the final say.

4. Detergent: more isn't better

Use the dose printed on the bottle, adjusted to the size of the load and how dirty it is. Extra detergent doesn't clean more; it leaves residue on clothes and in the machine, and that residue can be the start of an unpleasant smell.

5. Softener and laundry perfume: each in its place

6. Drying: where the scent is decided

  1. Take the laundry out as soon as the cycle ends. Wet clothes shut in the machine start to smell damp quickly.
  2. Shake each item out before hanging, so it dries faster and creases less.
  3. Leave space between items so air can pass.
  4. Whites in the sun, colours in the shade or inside out, so they don't fade.

If it still smells damp: Why does your laundry smell damp? And in winter, drying needs a different routine: Laundry drying slowly in winter?

7. The wardrobe

Don't fold or hang anything away until it's completely dry, especially jeans, towels and heavy items. And leave a little space in the wardrobe for air, because tightly packed clothes hold on to any leftover moisture.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wash new clothes before wearing them?

Yes, and on their own the first time, especially darks and colours, since the dye can run.

How often should I clean the washing machine?

Wipe the door seal and the detergent drawer once a month, and leave the door open after every wash. If your machine has a cleaning programme, follow the manual.

Fabric softener or laundry perfume?

Softener gives softness and scent together; laundry perfume is about scent only. If your clothes feel stiff, start with softener.

In short

Sort, read the label, stick to the dose, put softener in its compartment, and take the laundry out straight away to dry where air moves. That's the whole secret.
